Three thousand years of the Eastern palm

Palm reading in China is older than it is anywhere else. References appear in Zhou dynasty texts, and by the Song dynasty the discipline had produced its own classical canon — the Ma Yi Shen Xiang (麻衣神相), still the foundation text used by serious practitioners today. From China the practice travelled along trade routes into India, Persia and eventually Europe, which is why so many Western palmistry terms turn out to be translations.

The three principal lines

Eastern palmistry reads the hand as a whole, but three lines carry most of the weight:

• The Life Line (生命线) — vitality, constitution and the physical baseline. Read for depth and continuity, not for length of life.
• The Head Line (智慧线) — the quality of thinking: whether it is linear or associative, fast or deliberate, and where it breaks under stress.
• The Heart Line (感情线) — how affection is given and received, and where the person withdraws.

The mounts and the shape

The eight mounts at the base of the fingers and the edge of the palm correspond to the same Five Elements used in BaZi. A high Venus mount and a flat Saturn mount reads differently from the reverse, and both are read alongside the proportion of the whole hand: earth hands build, water hands adapt, air hands analyse, fire hands act.

What changes and what does not

This is the question we are asked most. The principal lines are largely settled — they describe architecture, not events. But the fine lines, the skin texture and the fullness of the mounts do shift over years, and those shifts are readable. A competent reading separates the two, and a dishonest one blurs them.
