Mian Xiang · The Eastern Art of Faces

Face Reading

Twelve palaces of the face, and what each one is telling you right now.

Mian Xiang — the Eastern art of faces

Mian Xiang (面相) is the Chinese science of reading the face — not the expression, but the underlying structure. It developed alongside BaZi and shares its assumption: that a personu2019s inner disposition hardens, over decades, into physical form. The face records what the person has repeatedly done.

Its founding texts — the Ma Yi Xiang Fa (麻衣相法) among them — were written to help officials judge character quickly, and later became one of the most widely practised folk arts in East Asia. The instruction manuals never changed much, and the modern reading still follows them.

The Three Courts

The face divides horizontally into three courts, which map to three periods of life:

  • Upper Court — forehead, from hairline to brow. Ages roughly 15–30: intellect, early direction, family origin.
  • Middle Court — brow to nose base. Ages 31–50: the working years. Career, will, resourcefulness.
  • Lower Court — nose base to chin. Ages 51 onward: later life, stability, the people who gather around you.

A face with well-developed courts and one neglected court is the most common reading there is — and it usually matches the personu2019s story exactly.

The Twelve Palaces

Overlaid on the face are twelve palaces, each governing a domain of life: Career, Wealth, Marriage, Children, Health, Travel, Siblings, and so on. Each palace is a specific region — the forehead centre for Career, the nose for Wealth, the area beside the eyes for Marriage. Reading is the act of comparing the palaces for strength and balance, then relating them to the Three Courts for timing.

Reading in practice

We work from two photographs: one facing the camera square-on, one in profile, both in even light without makeup or filters. The profile matters because half the classical indicators are depth features, and a front-on photograph hides them entirely.
