Three years of poor sleep, fixed by moving one bed
The bed was in line with the door. That is the whole case.
They had tried a new mattress, blackout blinds, a sleep tracker and a sleep clinic. The floor plan took four minutes to read.
The fault
The bed sat directly in line with the bedroom door, roughly two metres from it. In Form School this is the classic position of maximum exposure: you cannot see the entrance, and you are in the direct path of whatever moves through it. The body stays partly alert all night without the occupant ever knowing why.
What we recommended
Move the bed to the commanding position — diagonal to the door, with a solid wall behind the head and a clear sight line to the entrance. Nothing was purchased except a longer network cable for the bedside lamp.
Result and caveat
Sleep improved within about two weeks, by their account. The honest caveat: this was a well-designed bedroom in every other respect, which made the single fault easy to isolate. Most homes have four or five issues, and the improvements are cumulative rather than dramatic.
